Autumn Colours

Autumn is the time of year when I feel like creating something bold and colourful. This year again I just could not resist using these glorious autumn colours for my quilt! 

I painted my central panel with silk paints on fine white cotton, embroidered it using viscose threads, and quilted it. 

A beautiful landscape photograph was an inspiration for this quilt. I enjoyed using layers of embroidery thread over the painted background to achieve a sense of perspective and a light & shadow play.

Vintage Lace

It's time for the Blogger's Quilt Festival again!

My entry is this original design wholecloth quilt inspired by antique lace and Regency stonework. 

It is free-motion machine quilted using viscose embroidery thread. I used a combination of pearl white and french grey coloured threads to create an aged look here.

Trapunto is used for the "carved" elements:))

I am very pleased with how the backing has turned out - the silver thread makes it sparkle in the sunlight.

The quilt measures 22x23" or 57x58 cm. I used pure cotton fabrics and Heirloom 80/20 wadding. 

I thought that this quilt would look wonderful in a classical style interior, or against a piece of painted french style furniture.

Winter Warmers

It has suddenly turned cold and rainy over here this week, and everyone started digging out their warm clothes. I have decided that now it is a perfect time for me to make some felted scarves! 

They turned out so wonderfully soft, that I am now looking forward to wearing one of them soon.

I have almost made up my mind about the one that I am going to keep for myself... but I would love to know which one is your favourite!

Garnet Ring

My new wholecloth quilt is finished at last!

It took me ages to accomplish the feathers, as I stitched them with a metallic coloured thread. That thread proved to be a nightmare to hand quilt with, but I still love the shimmering effect it produces 

This special shimmer of the thread set against a subtle sheen of the satin cotton fabric reminds me of looking into the depths of a precious stone - hence the quilt's name.

I decided to decorate it with some lace and glass beads, as the quilt looked rather unfinished with a plain binding.

Bluebell Walk

A carpet of bluebells is one of my favourite God's creations ever! I used a landscape photo (with a kind permission of the photographer) to help me design the layout.

I have chosen a"confetti" technique to convey the light and shadow play of the morning sun in the woods. With this technique, tiny pieces of fabrics are scattered on a batting, covered with tulle, and then quilted all over to hold the pieces in place. 

I also decided to add some free-motion embroidery to create depth and colour variation. Angelina fibres are used to represent the sunlight.

Quilt size 60 x 60 cm. 

 I found that a simple wooden frame suits this quilt best, so that it can be displayed like a painting.

Frosted Stonework

This is my first wholecloth quilt design based on a fragment of Gothic revival stonework that decorates the Museum of Natural History in Oxford. 

Quilt size 62 х 62 см. It is hand-quilted, while the trapunto outline is free-motion machine stitched.

I could not resist creating some textural contract by adding a lace border and some tiny Mill Hill sparkling beads.

Магнолия в цвету

Самый красивый месяц в Оксфорде - это май, когда начинают цвести яблони и магнолии.  Их такое множество разных сортов, и у каждого свои, непохожие на другие, цветы. Объединяет все это великолепие цветовая гамма - город становится бело-розовым. 

Отвечаю на частые вопросы читателей - мои работы вышиты на некомпьютеризированной машинке (меня совершенно не привлекает вариант "нажми кнопку и смотри как машинка сама за тебя вышивает"). Начинаю я с того, что делаю фото понравившегося мне вида. Затем, глядя на это фото, рисую фоновые элементы красками для шелка. И наконец вышиваю те элементы, которым я хочу придать объем или визуально приблизить их.
